Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair

If your furnace is not heating your home effectively or making strange noises, it may need to be repaired. Other signs of a possible repair need include short cycling, where the furnace turns on and off rapidly, or if the furnace is emitting smells. If you notice any of these signs, it is important to contact a heating professional to have the furnace inspected and repaired.

If you notice any of the following signs, it's time to call our team of HVAC specialists for trusted furnace repairs:

  • Odd Smell from the Furnace - If you notice a strange smell coming from your furnace, it could be a sign of a gas leak or something burning inside the unit. While a faint odor is often normal when using a furnace for the first time in a while, a professional should inspect persistent or intensifying smells.
  • Cold or Lukewarm Air Temperatures - If your furnace is running, but your home is still cold, there may be a leak in your ductwork. Our technicians can locate and insulate leaks to prevent cold drafts and wasted electricity from ruining your winter.
  • Constant Thermostat Adjustments - Frequently changing the temperature on your thermostat can cause damage to your heating unit and lead to expensive repairs and replacements. Our team can help ensure your thermostat is properly installed and functioning to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your furnace.
  • Heater Has Trouble Starting - If your furnace is having trouble starting, it may be due to a dirty or faulty pilot, natural gas line problems, disconnected wiring, dead batteries, or a damaged thermostat. Our experts can troubleshoot and resolve these issues to get your furnace running smoothly again.
  • Decreased Heating Efficiency - If your furnace is not heating your home as efficiently as it used to, it could be a sign of a malfunction. Several factors, such as a dirty air filter, a faulty thermostat, or a clogged burner, can cause a decrease in heating efficiency. A professional can diagnose and repair these issues to ensure your furnace operates efficiently.
  • Reduced Airflow - A clogged air filter or a malfunctioning blower fan can cause reduced airflow. If you notice reduced airflow from your furnace, it's essential to have it inspected by a professional. A lack of airflow can also impact the air quality in your home, leading to health issues.
  • Discolored Pilot Light - A yellow pilot light clearly shows a gas imbalance and potentially serious health risks. If you notice a discolored pilot light, it's important to seek professional attention immediately.

Comprehensive Furnace Inspection Before Repair

Before repairing your furnace, it's essential to conduct a thorough inspection to identify any issues impacting its performance. A well-functioning furnace keeps your home warm and comfortable, can save you money on energy bills, and prevents expensive repairs in the long run. Here's what to look for when inspecting your furnace.

  • Check for Signs of Damage - Inspect your furnace for any signs of damage, such as rust, cracks, or loose parts. Damage to your furnace can lead to performance issues and even create safety hazards, such as gas leaks. If you notice any visible damage, addressing it before proceeding with any repairs is essential.
  • Ensure Proper Power Supply - Ensure that your furnace receives power by securely connecting all the wiring. Also, ensure the circuit breaker that controls the furnace is not tripped. If the furnace does not receive power, it will not function correctly and require professional attention.
  • Inspect Air Filter and Drain Lines - The air filter plays a critical role in your furnace's performance by ensuring proper airflow and keeping the furnace clean. A dirty or clogged filter can cause the furnace to work harder, leading to increased energy consumption and potential breakdowns. Also, check any drain lines to ensure they are clear, as clogged drain lines can cause water damage and impact the furnace's performance.
  • Check the Blower Fan - The blower fan circulates warm air throughout your home. Check that the fan is running properly and no debris or dust build-up can impact its function. A faulty blower fan can lead to decreased efficiency and, in severe cases, cause the furnace to overheat and shut down.

What is the average cost of a furnace repair?

Furnace repair costs can vary based on several factors, including the type of repair needed, the size and age of your furnace, and the cost of parts and labor. Here are some of the key factors that impact heating repair costs.

  1. Repair Time - The amount of time a repair or replacement can affect the cost. Simple repairs may only take a few hours, while more complex repairs or full system replacements can take several days. Our team of experts can provide a detailed estimate of the time required for the repair or replacement.
  2. Age, Size, and Condition of Your Furnace - The age and size of your furnace can impact repair costs. Older furnaces may require more extensive repairs and become harder to source parts. Additionally, the condition of your furnace can affect the cost of repairs. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can keep your furnace in good condition and reduce the risk of more significant repairs.
  3. Difficulty of Accessing Your Air Ducts - If repairs require access to your air ducts, they can impact the cost. In some cases, removing parts of your ceiling or walls may be necessary to access the ducts. Our team can assess the accessibility of your air ducts and provide an accurate estimate of the cost of repairs.
  4. Equipment, Parts, and Tools - The cost of equipment, parts, and tools needed for repairs can vary depending on the type of furnace and the repairs required. We source our parts from the best vendors to ensure your furnace functions properly and efficiently.

Repair or Replace? How to Determine What's Best for Your Heater

When your heater isn't working as well as it should be, you may wonder if it's time for a repair or if you should replace it entirely. Here are some factors to consider when making this decision.

  • Age of Your Heater - Heaters typically have a lifespan of 10-15 years. If your heater is approaching or exceeding this age range, it may be more cost-effective to replace it rather than invest in ongoing repairs.
  • Inadequate Heating - If your heater is not heating your home adequately or unevenly, it may be time to replace it. An inefficient system can lead to cold spots, increased energy bills, and discomfort for you and your family.
  • Outdated System - If your heater is outdated and no longer meets your needs, it may be time to upgrade to a more energy-efficient model. Investing in a newer system can save money on energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Frequent Repairs - Replacing your system may be more cost-effective if you call for heater repairs frequently. Frequent repairs can add up and may cost more than investing in a new system.
  • Poor Air Quality - If your heater contributes to poor indoor air quality or humidity levels in your home, it may be time to replace it. An outdated system can release dust, mold, and other pollutants into your home, exacerbating allergies and respiratory issues.

Our electric, tankless water heater stopped working and Tanous came out the next day to determine the issue. Given our unit was 11 years old, they recommended we replace instead of attempting to... repair. Within a few days, Carlos came out to site and replaced our old water heater. The entire process took about 3 hours (including hauling the units up/down 5 flights of stairs) and everything is now working great! Carlos was kind, courteous, and also provided general information on how frequently to service our new heater. We plan to have Carlos back to service our AHU/Condenser!read more
