No heat in winter
Open cabinet doors under sinks (lets warm air reach pipes). Let faucets drip slightly. Keep the home above 55°F by any means — portable heaters in occupied rooms only.
Water leak
Shut off the water supply to the leaking unit. For water heaters: turn off the gas or breaker at the panel. Move valuables away from the area.
AC out in summer
Close blinds and curtains. Use fans to circulate air. Move vulnerable family members (elderly, infants) to the coolest room. Stay hydrated.
