When it’s time to replace

Signs your AC is past its prime.

Not every AC needs replacing — but some signs are pretty clear. If two or more of these are true, replacement is usually the better call.

12+ years old

Most central AC systems run 12–15 years. Ductless and PTAC are similar. Past that, parts get harder to find and efficiency drops sharply.

Repair cost is 50%+ of new

Once you’re quoting a $4,000 repair on a 14-year-old system, replacing usually pencils out better — with better efficiency and a new warranty.

R-22 refrigerant

EPA phased out R-22 in 2020. The remaining supply is expensive, and a leak basically forces replacement on older systems.

Climbing utility bills

Steady usage but rising bills usually means the system is working harder than it should. Often points to compressor wear or refrigerant loss.

Can’t reach setpoint

If the system runs constantly without cooling the space, either it’s undersized, the ductwork leaks, or it’s near end-of-life. Worth a load calc.

Multiple breakdowns this year

Two or three repair calls in one summer is usually the system telling you it’s done. Replacement starts to look like the cheaper path.

How a new install works

From estimate to running system — the full path.

We don’t hand you a brochure and walk out. Here’s how it actually works.

01

In-home estimate

Manual J load calculation — not an eyeball guess. We measure space, insulation, ductwork, and existing fuel/venting before sizing anything.

02

Options & quote

Two or three real options with efficiency, brand, warranty, and full installed price. Financing options included up front.

03

Permits & install

We pull permits, coordinate building access if needed, and install clean. Old equipment hauled out the same day.

04

Test & walkthrough

Full system test, registration of warranties, walkthrough so you know how to use it. Then we follow up after the first season.

What affects the price

AC install pricing varies more than repair does. Three things drive most of it.

01

System type & size

A 2-ton central AC replacement is a different job than a 4-zone ductless install or a high-output PTAC. Manual J load calc tells us what you actually need.

02

Ductless vs. ducted complexity

Replacing in-place is cheaper than running new line sets through plaster brownstone walls. We’ll quote both routes if there’s a choice.

03

Building access & permits

Hoboken/JC high-rises often need permits, freight elevator booking, and after-hours condenser placement. We coordinate all of it.

We won’t quote a number sight-unseen — that’s how you get charged double. NEIF financing is available on residential installs. Call 201-245-5151 to schedule an in-home estimate.

Quick answers

Common questions about AC installation.

Most ductless mini-splits: 1–2 days. Central AC replacement (existing ductwork): 1 day. New central AC with new ductwork: 2–4 days. PTAC unit swaps: a few hours per unit. We’ll walk you through the timeline before scheduling.
Manual J is the industry-standard load calculation — it accounts for square footage, insulation, windows, sun exposure, ductwork, and climate. Eyeball sizing (“a 3-ton should do it”) is how systems end up oversized or undersized. Right-sized AC saves 15–30% on operating cost and runs quieter.
Yes for most equipment replacement and all new installations. We pull permits as part of the install — you don’t deal with city hall. For condo buildings we also coordinate with building management for approvals.
Yes — through NEIF for residential installs. We’ll show you the monthly payment alongside the cash price so you can compare. Commercial work goes through different channels.
Depends on the application. Fujitsu is our specialty for ductless (brownstones, row homes, condo retrofits). Friedrich for PTAC (Hoboken/JC high-rises). York, Carrier, and Trane for central AC. We’ll explain the trade-offs in plain language.
Yes — this is one of our most common installs. Line sets typically run through closets, behind crown molding, or up exterior walls hidden in line-set covers. Single-zone runs $4,000–$7,000 installed; multi-zone $10,000–$20,000+.
