What affects the cost

Heating repair pricing is even more varied than AC. The system itself, its age, and access all play in.

System type

A failed gas valve on a modern condensing boiler is different work than a soot-clogged old steam boiler. Hydronic, steam, and forced-air all have different diagnostic paths.

Parts & age

Some older boilers (especially pre-2000) use parts that have to be sourced specially. We’ll tell you on the phone whether it’s a stock part or a longer wait.

Steam vs. hydronic complexity

Old-Hoboken steam systems often need pipe access, low-water cutoff testing, and skim work that hydronic doesn’t. Old buildings, more time.

When is “no heat” a true emergency?

Below ~25°F outside, with pipes at risk of freezing, or vulnerable people (infants, elderly, medical needs) in the home — that’s an emergency call. Mild evening with extra blankets and a working fireplace — usually fine until morning. We’ll help you decide on the phone.

Boiler vs. furnace vs. heat pump — what’s the difference?

Boilers heat water (steam or hot-water/hydronic) that warms radiators or radiant floors. Furnaces heat air and blow it through ducts. Heat pumps use refrigerant to move heat — same equipment as central AC, just reversed. Each has its own repair patterns. Hoboken/JC has all three in heavy use.

Do you service old steam radiators?

Yes — this is one of the most common heating systems in old Hoboken brownstones. Steam boilers, radiator air vents, low-water cutoffs, sight-glass cleaning. We know what good and bad steam looks like.

Heat pumps in winter — do they work?

Modern cold-climate heat pumps work down to about 5°F with full output. Below that, most installs have a backup (gas furnace or electric strip). If yours seems weak in cold weather, it could be a refrigerant or defrost issue worth diagnosing.

Is my 25-year-old boiler worth repairing?

Maybe. If it’s a cast-iron boiler with sound piping, you can sometimes get another decade out of it for a few hundred dollars. If the heat exchanger is cracked or you’re burning oil at $4/gallon, replacement starts to look better. We’ll give you both numbers.

Parts: manufacturer warranty (typically 1–10 years for major components depending on brand). Labor: our workmanship warranty on the repair. We document everything on the invoice.
