When it’s time to replace

Signs your heating system is at end-of-life.

Not every old system needs replacing. But a few patterns make replacement the clearly cheaper long-term call.

15+ years old

Most residential boilers and furnaces run 15–25 years. Once you’re past that, parts get expensive and efficiency lags well behind modern equipment.

Repair cost is 50%+ of new

A $3,000 control-and-burner job on a 22-year-old furnace is hard to justify when a new high-efficiency furnace is $7,000. Money usually goes further on replacement.

Low AFUE / climbing bills

Pre-1995 equipment is often 60–75% AFUE. Modern condensing equipment is 90–96%. The gas savings alone can pay for the upgrade over time.

Replacement parts hard to find

If your tech is sourcing parts from eBay or warning you the next failure means scrapping it — that’s the system telling you.

Yellow flame or soot

Yellow flames, soot on the burner, or unusual smells mean incomplete combustion. Sometimes fixable, but on old equipment it’s often the heat exchanger going.

System can’t keep up

Constant running in cold weather without reaching setpoint. Either undersized, lost heat exchanger surface, or the building’s changed. Worth a load calc.

How a new install works

From estimate to a system you trust.

Heating installs are bigger projects than AC. We walk you through it.

01

In-home estimate

Manual J load calculation — not an eyeball guess. We measure space, insulation, ductwork, and existing fuel/venting before sizing anything.

02

Options & quote

Two or three real options with efficiency, brand, warranty, and full installed price. Financing options included up front.

03

Permits & install

We pull permits, coordinate building access if needed, and install clean. Old equipment hauled out the same day.

04

Test & walkthrough

Full system test, registration of warranties, walkthrough so you know how to use it. Then we follow up after the first season.

What affects the price

Heating install pricing varies more than any other service we offer. Three drivers do most of the work.

01

System type

Boiler, furnace, or heat pump — very different equipment costs. Steam boilers and condensing combi units are at opposite ends of the price range.

02

Existing fuel & venting

Switching from oil to gas, or upgrading to a condensing system, often means new gas piping or sidewall venting. Big change to scope.

03

Conversion complexity

Steam-to-hydronic conversions, or replacing radiators with forced-air, or adding zones — each adds days to the project. We’ll quote the conversion separately so you see the breakdown.

We won’t quote sight-unseen. NEIF financing is available on residential installs. Call 201-245-5151 for an in-home estimate.

Quick answers

Common questions about heating installation.

Condensing furnaces: 15–20 years. Cast-iron hydronic boilers: 25–35 years with maintenance. Steam boilers: 20–30 years. Cold-climate heat pumps: 12–18 years. Maintenance habits matter as much as the equipment choice.
Usually you replace with the same type unless you’re doing a full system change. If you have existing radiators or radiant floors, you stay with a boiler. If you have ductwork, you stay with a furnace. Conversions are possible but expensive.
Heat pumps cost less to run if you also have AC needs (heat pump = AC + heating in one unit). Gas furnaces have lower upfront cost and faster heat output in deep cold. Many homes do well with a hybrid setup — heat pump for mild days, gas for cold snaps. We’ll talk through what fits your home.
Required for gas piping, venting, and most new equipment installs in Hoboken/JC. We pull permits and schedule the city inspection as part of the job. You don’t deal with city hall.
Yes — through NEIF for residential. Monthly payments often run close to the gas-savings from a new high-efficiency system. We’ll show you both numbers.
Depends on the application. Weil-McLain and Navien for boilers (hydronic and combi). Coleman and York for furnaces. Fujitsu for cold-climate heat pumps. We’ll explain trade-offs in plain language — not a sales pitch.
